On the morning of April 23, two visitors arrived ready to learn about what really happens at LCI from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For the first time ever, Lincoln Center Institute participated in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Approximately 25 children, ranging in ages from 5-16, participated in the program in various departments of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. Some highlights from the group’s morning activities include a helicopter flyby, getting staff ID cards, a docent-led tour of Avery Fisher Hall, observing musicians rehearsing in a greenroom, and being on stage at AFH.

Back at LCI, Sydney, 7, my niece and the Library Assistant for the day, along with Jada, 5, Meryl Jefferson’s niece and acting Administrative Assistant, learned more about the specific duties our jobs entail.

Stationed at the Circulation & Reference Desk, Sydney was trained how to use the online library database and to check out books to patrons. When asked to help recommend a title for a staff member’s three year old son she selected The Blues of Flats Brown “because the book tells about music and it would be really good for a little boy because there is a dog in it.”

Back in the copy room, Jada helped Meryl and Victoria Gomez with inventory. After making note of what was out of stock they visited the 9th floor mailroom and replenished LCI’s stationary supplies.

Sydney and Jada became fast friends and decided to make bookmarks for LCI staff members. About twenty bookmarks were created by the duo and passed out by hand. When asked what the item was for Sydney responded, “When you are at work reading a book now you won’t lose your place!”

When asked what the highlight of the day was Jada replied, “Getting food and seeing the orchestra. It was all so graceful, so magical. I could barely believe it!” After Sydney was asked if she enjoyed herself she responded, “Maybe I can come back here next year! All the people are so nice! It’s so much fun!”
